Artist Statement
Hello!

My name is Stephen Steger and welcome to my site! I am an Artist, Art Educator, & Art Advocate living and working in Central Texas! I believe I have a slightly different take on art. Art is the oldest written language known to human kind. Before we had a common language we communicated by drawing on the sides of caves. Our ability to create has the capacity to unite us all. Art is something everyone can benefit from regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, skill, or even ability.
Art does not have to be "good" or "pretty" to be good art. Art is subjective and can be very personal. I believe the innumerable benefits of Art can be divided in to what I consider the "three C's", Catharsis, Connection, and Creativity!
Art is deeply cathartic. It allows a channel to release all of the emotions, to pour from yourself into the work without judgement. It allows for personal exploration and growth. It provides new and various avenues for thought & consideration, and improves problem solving and critical thinking. It enables the use of different perspectives.

Art provides connection. There is a special moment when a person viewing something you made is affected by your work and by extension, you.  It may be a memory your art stirred up, an emotion, a new realization, or any of innumerable or inconceivable links that result in a connection between you an the viewer via your art!

Art enhances creativity an creative thinking. We all have the ability to create. Art touches every area of our lives, yet most people never see it. It is our ability to create that sets us aside and makes us unique. As we explore and create we evolve and understand. We play and we learn. We discover new processes and arrive at new solutions. We learn more about the world around us and the person within us.
Bio

I grew up within a family not entirely supportive of the arts. Band and Choir were the "accepted" art forms within our home growing up. I loved singing but did not like the idea of being in choir, and though I tried very hard I feel I sill owe an apology to anyone who ever heard me play the Tenor Saxophone. It was not until I had a friend in high school who was in the Art room as soon as the teacher opened it in the morning, that I found Art. The teacher said if I was going to visit I was going to make something. Though I never got to take a class it stayed with me.

As a police officer, I had to deal with a ton of stressful situations, and a pottery class at the Cultural Activities Center became  both an outlet for stress and raw emotions as well as the second foray of my artistic exploration. In 2014 my mother was diagnosed with middle to late stage Alzheimer's and I returned home to provide her full time care during which I returned to school and turned my attention to Art.

In 2017 I established Neo Alchemy Arts as my personal brand of Art. Where most artist focus on one or a few mediums or styles of Art, I chose to follow my heart and continue to add more mediums and styles of art as I have the availability and financial means to do so. While I am fully aware that I shall never master one art form while focusing on several, I am unapologetically happy and content in the ability to move between an even intermingle multiple art disciplines as I choose!
